Mindful Eating, Mindful Skincare: How Motherhood Inspired My Brand

From Baby-Led Weaning to Clean Skincare: How Motherhood Inspired Sourced

When I think about why my sister and I created Sourced, I always come back to one thing: intentionality. We’ve both been on a journey of being more mindful about what we put in and on our bodies—and even who we surround ourselves with. So when Syd asked me to write a personal blog post about my Sourced journey, it hit me: I was knee-deep in baby-led weaning (BLW) at the exact same time I was dreaming up this brand.

That wasn’t just a coincidence—it was a full-circle aha moment.

How BLW Changed the Way I Think About Ingredients

When I started BLW with my daughter, I became hyper-aware of every ingredient that went into her tiny body. And, in parallel, I realized I should be just as mindful about what went on her skin (and mine).

I’ve always loved to cook and try to be as healthy as possible, so when it came time to introduce solids, I wanted to do it right. No processed purées, no hidden sugars—just real, whole foods. As a ‘90s baby raised on sugary cereals and dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets (and a recovering picky eater), I was determined to set my daughter up differently. If that meant handing her a giant piece of broccoli and watching her enthusiastically gum it to death, so be it.

BLW might seem intimidating, but for me, it was natural—and, honestly, fun. It made me rethink everything we were eating as a family. I found myself scanning food labels obsessively and asking, “If I wouldn’t give this to my baby, why am I eating it?” Don’t get me wrong—we live in New York, so there’s still a weekly BEC (bacon, egg, and cheese) and pizza slice in the mix. But overall, our household made a major shift toward simple, whole ingredients.

If It’s Good Enough to Eat, It Should Be Good Enough for Your Skin

That same mindset carried over into skincare. Just like I wanted my daughter’s first foods to be nourishing and clean, I wanted the same for the products I put on her delicate skin. But when I started researching baby skincare, I hit a wall.

Food was easy for me—I love cooking, and it comes naturally. But when it came to deciphering the scientific-sounding ingredients in diaper creams and baby soaps? No clue. So, like any millennial mom, I took to TikTok. I deep-dived into skincare influencers, hidden-gem brands, and ingredient breakdowns. What started as a quest to find clean baby products turned into a full-blown overhaul of my own beauty routine. Out went the synthetic-laden serums and mystery-ingredient lotions.

And that’s when it really clicked: The same whole-food principles that I was applying in my kitchen could—and should—apply to my skincare.

The Birth of Sourced

That realization is what ultimately led me to create Sourced. I wanted transparency. I wanted high-quality, natural, ethically sourced ingredients. I wanted to know that what I was putting on my skin (and my baby’s skin) was just as thoughtfully made as the food I was feeding her.

Motherhood has a funny way of shifting your perspective. Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as handing your kid a giant piece of broccoli.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Now, I’m sharing all this to say that even small changes matter. Have you ever looked at the ingredients in your skincare products the same way you do with food? Let’s talk in the comments!
